Eww, it's the Flu

Unfortunately the most wonderful time of the year also comes with the most dreaded time of the year, flu season. I don't know what it is about this year compared to the last two years but the flu seems to be hitting harder and lasting longer. I've seem my fair share of it in just a couple weeks through family members and through work. So of course I got to thinking, how can essential oils help with the flu? As you will learn about me I am kind of a nerd when it comes to researching health related conditions and finding what ways essential oils can be used for them.

A friend of mine who got me started in essential oils referred me to  https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ as a resource for researching oils and health. I was familiar with it from nursing school but hadn't even thought of it as a resource for the use of oils. With the flu striking all around me I took to researching how to possibly prevent getting the flu, manage the symptoms and shorten the course of it through the use of essential oils. I was rather surprised and pleased with the amount of supportive data I found. So lets talk about what essential oils I found with supportive research to help the flu.

In the study at  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8706319/  I found the Eucalyptus Globulus is an active agent against influenza a. It also  showed that Eucalyptus Globulus significantly inhibited the effect of type A flu plaque formation and that exposure to Eucalyptus Globulus steam for 10 minutes produced a 94% reduction in the viral infection as well as inhibiting hemagglutinin activity.

Basic summary is that the 1,8-cineole and other monoterpenes that are within  Eucalyptus bind and prevent the hemagglutinin protein. In return it keeps the virus from binding with its receptors and from entering the host cell.

Pretty amazing stuff if you ask me. I truly believe that there is a use for essential oils in all things health related, because God created us, he created the plants and told us that he will always provide for us.
